Healthy water

Access to healthy water:

Having access to healthy water is very important to me because it provides nutrients for the body. It also allows the brain to function better and it helps get rid of things the body doesn’t need. I just began a no soda and water only diet and I love the results. I feel refreshed and my skin has never felt so clean. Having access to clean water gives me a clear free mind about the water I intake. Having clean water affects children in a major way  without access to healthy water alot of children will be unable to function properly.

Access to healthy water in Africa:

Africa issue with clean water and access to adequate sanitation are widespread. Young children die from dehydration and malnutrition, results of suffering from diarrhea illnesses that could be prevented by clean water and good hygiene (Metwally, Ibrahim, Saad, & Abu El-Ela, 2006). Diseases such as cholera are spread rampantly during the wet season. Women and young girls, who are the major role-players in accessing and carrying water, are prevented from doing income-generating work or attending school, as the majority of their day is often spent walking miles for their daily water needs.

After reading about the issues in Africa, I am so grateful for the things I do have. Every day we take for granted the small things such as taking 15-20 minute showers. We should all do our part and help Africa to get access to clean water so they can experience some of the luxuries we have.

Personal Birth experience

My personal birth experience:
I have decided to share the birth of my two children because of how different they both were. The birth of my daughter was smooth, I experienced very little pain and spotting was the only reason I went to the hospital. I received the epidural right after the doctor broke my water, and all I could feel was pressure. I arrived at the hospital at 10:30 and my daughter was born at 2:35. Immediately all of my baby weight went away and I felt happy to have a healthy 7lb 12 oz baby girl. Three years later I decided to do it again, the birth of my son was rather difficult. I began to experience pain during the 7h month of my pregnancy so I was placed on bed rest. I went to the hospital several times before finally they kept me. I was in labor for 14 hours this includes the horrible back pain I had before I was admitted. I felt every contraction; even after the epidural I was very uncomfortable and I felt a lot of pressure. My weight gain during this pregnancy decided to stick around, but I was happy to have healthy 7lb 8oz baby boy.

During my research I found births of Bantu people of South Africa very interesting. It is very common among the Bantu people that an older woman such as a grandmother or a traditional birth attendant assist with birth. After a birth, the mother is secluded in her hut with the baby until she stops bleeding and burial of the placenta and cord has great importance. When the cord falls off, it is understood that the newborn now not only belongs to the mother, but to the whole community. All African cultures believe that a new baby has come from the spirit world bearing gifts and talents. The naming ceremony is therefore of vital importance, connecting a baby to the ancestors who have imparted these talents and bonding the newborn to the community.
The bearing gifts reminded me of baby showers I feel that in all cultures the birth of a baby is a very precious moment. It was great to see how other countries celebrate births and also how women have this awesome gift no matter where you are from!
Happy Mothers Day!

Thank you! Thank you!

Christina and LaCasa you are both extraordinary women who I have really enjoyed sharing my first blog experience with. Early Childhood is not an easy profession but besides parents we are the best first teachers a child could ever have. We set the foundation for structured learning; we build social, personal, language, cognitive, fine and gross motor skills. I truly believe this and I wish both of the best on your professional journey. Mrs. Callahan, I have really enjoyed this course thank you for your patience and knowledge.I will continue to blog and hope you will do the same.

Code of Ethics

1.We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of child.
Being role models is essential to the early childhood professional, children model what they see. Parents also look to teachers for advice on how to handle behavior issues. As teachers we must become familiar with resources so we can advocate for families.

2.We shall advocate for equal access to high quality services and supports for children and families to enhance their quality of lives.
Families cope better when the services show support by providing quality services. A program the offers a loving and caring environment is what families need to enhance their quality of life. A program that is up to date will keep families informed of changes in early childhood and even the community.
3.We shall support professionals new to the field by mentoring them in practice of evidence and ethically based services.
Professionals new to the field need all of the support and resources to be successful. Being selfish in this field will get you nowhere, being able to share ideas or sometimes just be a listening ear will get

My Favorite Quotes !

Hillary Clinton “The best tool you can give a child is shovel” It is about giving our children the skills they need to overcome adversity and to shovel their way out from under whatever life piles on(Clinton 2006)

I like this quote because skills are necessary to be able to survive, and some of these skills can be learned at early ages. Some of skills include social, emotional, cognitive, and language but are not limited to just these skills.  That is why it is important as early childhood professionals we take the time to make sure we are exposing children to environments where their social, and emotional skills can be expanded.

Week 2 Quote: Edge Perspectives with John Hagel:” We often talk about passion, but we tend to use it very loosely”. We usually refer to passion in passing – it is rarely the primary focus of discussion or analysis. (Hagel 2009)

I like this quote because it opened my eyes up to identify the passion that I have to expose pre-school age children a warm loving learning environment. Passion is something that many people tend to put to the side and forget about. I am happy that I have found my passion and I am pursing this passion as far as I can take it.

-NFL- SUPERSTAR- Justin tuck Home-Field Advantage

Justin Tuck and his wife, Lauran founded Tuck's R.U.S.H in 2008 for literacy to encourage children to read. Justin parents believed in education, by supporting literacy, the Bucks hope to encourage children to develop a love for books. As Justin says, "Academic success starts with reading and literacy."

This book is about a 274 pound ,six feet five NFL football player name Justin Tuck  who plays for the New York Giants. When people ask him how he got so tough, he would say "You'd be tough too, if you grew up with five sisters. Justin tells the story about the day his sisters gave him a haircut, you can imagine how this turned out. Even though they gave him a reverse mohawk he knew they  loved him and he loved them and that's what family is about. It also helped as he got older it got harder to push him around, but maybe someday he will let them reverse the mohawk.

I love this book because it is Afro-centric and it shows how family bond and it is very funny. My kids are 9 and 12 they love it we read it every night. Whenever you read it to your pre-school children make sure you tell them scissors are only for paper not hair. This book is great for all ages!

"It takes a village to raise a child" African Proverb

My favorite quote about children is the African Proverb "It takes a village to raise a child". I love this quote because I am a firm believer and living proof that it really takes a community to help children believe in themselves. This is also the motto of my classroom I make sure everyone is involve with the children in my class. Parents are always welcome, field trips to local community business like grocery stores, fire stations, police stations, nature parks,  and museums are some ways I keep the community involved. Academic success not only starts with reading and literacy but also with being aware of your surroundings and knowing that you have the support of the community.
